  1. A personal opinion why you should support prison hunger strikes.

    To starve oneself to death rather than submit to a life no better than a caged animal is an act of defiance that not only draws attention to one’s pity, but it is an act of will power to maintain human dignity, human respect and respect for others by detatching one’s self from the basic craving of food. This will power is very important in a country with an obesity epidemic, junk food addiction, and the highest portion of it’s citizens in prison in entire world.

    The Pelican Bay prison and many other prisons throught the USA and the world subject the inmates to divisive racist gang warfare and continuous harassment from jail guards to snitch and implicate gang related activity or face punishment and torture, but the hunger strike movement is interracial and not gang affiliated, which again is another testimony to will power to maintain human dignity and spirit to drop all feuds against rival gangs.

    Even if you are pro-death penalty for many of these criminals, and don’t feel a shred of sympathy for their conditions, another way to see see this hunger strike is a final act of remorse, penitence, and altruism for the victims.

    DISCLAIMER: Other than my heart going out for the need for local sovereignty and human rights everywhere in the world, I am not affiliated with Irish nationalist groups, but find their stories of resistance inspiring. I hope that any supporters of the Pelican Bay Hunger strike take a moment to learn about the sacrafice and resistance that theseIrish P.O.W.’s did. I also hope that any people who love the Bobby Sands story from Ireland and the UK show some solidarity against America’s abusive prison system too.

    I highly recommend this film:

  2. I AGREE TOTALLY WITH THE ABOVE, I have familiarized myself with the Irish hungerstrike it really did show just how determind the ten men were whom died for their country.
    Its just so sad that these men in the shu {my fiance is one of these men} are so weak and fragile to begin with i really hope they are listened to very very quicky.

    GOD BLESS THEM IN THEIR STRUGGLE!!!

  3. Hi, my name is Heather,I am writing about the statewide prisoner hunger strike that began @ Pelican Bay. I support the prisoners & their resonable ” 5 core demands”. I urge the CDCR to neigotiate with prisoners immeditely and in good faith.The prisoners who are involved in this hunger strike, have my full support! They are human, and deserve to be treated so. Its so cruel how they are treated. The inmates arent asking for much. Give them what they want and make the system a place where they can better themselves and learn from their mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance and Im sure those who have been incarcerated for 15 + years will not return.Thank You

  4. Redwood Curtain CopWatch is in full support of the prisoners hunger striking for human rights. End Solitary Confinement! ABOLISH the prison industrial complex. We have been posting on our website about the hunger strike. We rallied in SOLIDARITY in Eureka on July 8th. Sending prayers for the lives and the struggle of the prisoners striking in Pelican Bay, Corcoran, and wherever else they are. Prayers and healing for the minds of our sisters and brothers -on the inside or the outside- who are locked up and for those who are in isolation. You are not alone. Honoring the courage and sacrifice of the hunger strikers. We will continue to do what we can, be it phone calls, emails, rallys, media, ACTION. If anyone wants to contact us to help in any way, please do.

  5. The International Action Center endorses and wholeheartedly supports and stands in solidarity with the prisoners at Pelican Bay in their heroic struggle. Our organization will be sending out a national email calling for support. The New York City East-Coast headquarters of the organization is organizing a protest on Monday, July 18 at the California Franchise office at 47th St. & 6th Ave. at 11:30 a.m.

  6. I am appalled at California’s inhumane and torturous treatment of it’s inmates and wholeheartedly supports and stands in solidarity with the prisoners at Pelican Bay and support their 5 core demands . I urge the CDCR to negotiate with prisoners immeditely and in good faith inorder to not let another Bobby Sands story happen .

  7. The Pelican Bay prisoners on hunger strike are putting their lives on the line to let the world know of the barbaric treatment meted out to those incarcerated in the U.S. At a time when more and more workers are jobless and desperate because of capitalism’s failure, the state is becoming ever harsher and more brutal. The hunger strikers are an inspiration to all who are struggling for a better world. We will continue to give them and the other prisoners striking for justice a voice in the pages of our newspaper and online at http://www.workers.org. — Deirdre Griswold, Editor, Workers World

  8. The New Orleans Loiterers Union Supports the Pelican Bay Hunger Strike, and all Prisoners fighting the disgusting cruelty of solitary confinement and prison as a whole. Reading the five core demands left our members thinking ” what could be more reasonable than this?”. We urge the CDCR to negotiate if they must, but primarily we urge them to accept all the demands. In fact we urge them to quit their jobs and repay society for their crimes against humanity by devoting the rest of their life to prison abolition and restorative justice alternatives. The Loiterers union is about the liberation of all physical and metaphysical space, not just the side walks, parks and parking lots in which we Loiter. This is why the Union takes a Abolitionist stance on Prisons. We wish success and freedom for the strikers at pelican bay

  9. This treatment is not exclusive to California prisons. In Idaho at the ID State Correctional Institution they will not give hygiene supply’s such as toothbrush or paste, deodorant etc. to anyone lock up there with no money to buy new. They serve miniscule food amount that a child could not live on. They only sell pillows, no one is allowed to just have one. I wish the California prisoners luck and good will in there fight for more humane treatment behind bars. I never thought I would be for the help of prisoners rights but I never knew it was this bad! S V Keeton

  10. Prisoners are fellow human beings and no one has the right to abuse them, no matter what they have done or not done. I know first hand how horrible California prisons are and the suffering that prisoners are forced to endure which is cruel and unusual punishment and outlawed by our constitution. We must bear in mind that most of these people will be returned to society sooner or later. For the good of all of society we need rehabilitation and job and life skills for prisoners, not brutality and torture that rival the Soviet Gulags.

    THE PEOPLE’S ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS
    SUPPORTS THE PRISON HUNGER STRIKE

    The People’s Organization for Progress (POP), based in Newark, New Jersey, is an independent, grassroots, community- based, politically progressive associations of citizens working for racial, social and economic justice and greater unity in the community. The goals of POP include the elimination of racism, inequality, poverty, sexism, unjust economic exploitation, all forms of social oppression, degradation, human misery suffering, and injustice. Therefore:

    POP stands in solidarity with the prisoners on hunger strike in the Pelican Bay SHU and with their allies in California’s prisons and the SHU’s throughout the country..

    POP understands the roles that prisons play in enforcing social control, perpetuating racism, and promoting private profit in our society, at the expense of individual prisoners, their families, and their communities. We see how the policies, practices and culture of the prison system undermine legitimate objectives of a responsible criminal justice system – promoting public safety, healing individuals, and resolving conflicts. Maximum security prisons like Pelican Bay, which herd people into long term sensory deprivation concrete cages, are the most extreme manifestation of this system, different in degree but not in kind from prisons throughout the country.

    Regardless of what the current Justices of the Supreme Court may declare, we believe that the American people, so appalled by the conditions exposed at Abu Ghraib, would find the conditions at Pelican Bay to be cruel and unusual – incompatible with the values of a civilized society and the Eighth Amendment to our Constitution. Therefore, the heroic efforts of the people confined at Pelican Bay and their imprisoned allies, who are risking their very lives to expose and challenge these conditions, are fighting for all people in prison. The attention they bring to the conditions in our prisons is a crucial part of one of the most important struggles of our time. As such, they deserve our utmost respect and support.

    We therefore urge/demand that California Governor Brown and Corrections Commissioner Cate offer proper medical care to the people who have participated in the hunger strike, and immediately begin meaningful negotiations and implementation of the strikers’ Core Demands.

  12. In California we are the leaders in tough on crime and have 33 state prisons where low level drug addicts are put in prison where an addiction is bred into an affliction much harder to escape where races are segregated and race wars loom on the horizon eventually releasing displaced alienated souls back into the community without any job placement and no where to live! The prisoners don’t have any rights! It is all a shell game! At Pelican Bay they can’t even have art supplies of any kind. They should be allowed to grow spiritually and emotionally, not be attacked from every angle, lied to, and tortured. http://www.lockdownpublishing.com

  13. The Salt Lake Anarchist Black Cross is having a demonstration today, August 5th at 3:30-6 at 125 S. State St. Salt Lake City, UT at the Federal Building. Followed by a show by HUMILITATE from Basque Country ALL SYSTEMS FAIL SCREAMIN’ CYN CYN AND THE PONS. Sorry late replay thought someone else had already contacted you! In solidarity!

  14. The Clean Slate Committee, Connecticut chapter supports the Prisoners in CA, calls for good-faith negotiations, and wants the 5 core demands met. To demonstrate our support, we have formed a Rolling Hunger Strike in CT, between August 1st to August 23rdunder the coalition named “CT in Solidarity with California Prisoners.” Come August 23rd we will decide what to do next.

  16. The Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement, based in Houston, Texas, had endorsed the hunger strike and is very much in support of what the men living in the SHU to try to ease their conditions. Texas has more prisoners in isolation than any state and the 300+ men on death row live in total isolation. This has been going on for 11 years and it is so horrific that men are giving up appeals, losing their minds, trying to commit suicide, and becoming mere shells of the men they once were. The Abolition Movement is very involved in trying to end this isolation and we, as well as the men on death row, are so grateful to the courageous men at Pelican Bay for calling the attention to the effects of isolation. These men have inspired us in Texas to continue this struggle. Love and solidarity to all involved!

  17. Please add the Senate Select Community Committee on California’s Correctional System endorses and attended the 8-23-’11 Public Safety Committee hearing to support the Pelican Bay Hunger Strikeers b/c of the surreal, Kafquaesque tone to the reality that Torture in violation of United Nations Article 5 Covenant Agains Torture, Cruel and Unusual Punishment and Demeaning Treatment exists today right here in California Prisons.

  18. The Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement would like to be listed as a supporter of the Pelican Bay Hunger strike. All of the men on death row in Texas have lived in total isolation since 2000. They are single-celled in a 6 X 10 foot cell with a solid steel door. We understand all too well the effects of isolation and are sending our solidarity to all those in California who will begin the hu8nger strike again on Monday, Sept. 26. At a time when the economy is forcing layoffs, when the government is bailing out banks but doing nothing to stop foreclosures, and the Pentagon is draining tax dollars for unjust wars, while our schools, clinics and day care centers are underfunded, the US always has money for prisons and torture within them. The prisoners willing to sacrifice their lives to stop the inhumane treatment are an inspiration. Thanks to each and every one of you for your courage.

  19. Buffalo, NY activists began a chain-fast in solidarity with the strikers and their goals at the beginning; we resume the chain-fast (each faster doing one day a week) and glad to hear that the strike is expanding beyond the California dungeons. I am authorized to pledge organizational support from Prisoners are People Too and the Erie County Prisoners Rights Coalition. Thanks to the strikers for igniting the spark, and for your persistence and defiance in the face of terrible conditions. Many are with you and the numbers are growing. For peace and justice.

  20. Please add Rabbis for Human Rights-North America as an organizational supporter. We will be asking our rabbis to send messages of support.

  21. StopIsolation sends its support to the prisoners.
    StopIsolation is a website is intended to:

    – Promote international recognition that long-term solitary confinement and other forms of enforced long-term isolation of prisoners are cruel and inhuman and are forms of torture;
    – Encourage countries to prohibit long-term solitary confinement and enforced isolation;
    – Encourage countries to prohibit the transfer of prisoners to places where they would be at risk of such treatment;
    – Encourage people to collaborate internationally to achieve these ends.

    Our international statement against prisoner isolation is still open for support – please sign up.

  24. On 8 July, 30,000 prisoners in California began a hunger strike and work stoppage in protest against the inhumane prison regime and excessive use of solitary confinement. Thank you for what you are doing. Please look after yourselves.
