People in solitary confinement have been loudly awakened by guards every 30 minutes 24/7 since the night of August 2nd! Please help stop this sleep deprivation torture.
On Nov 30th, the 119th day of interrupted sleep 48 times a day, about 20 people took part in an EMERGENCY PROTEST at CDCr headquarters in Sacramento to stop these so-called “security/welfare checks” being done every 30 minutes in the Pelican Bay SHU and other solitary units in CA prisons.
Sleep deprivation is torture, and that is what these loud, intrusive checks are causing. For people in solitary cells 23-24 hours a day, the noise and disruption every 30 minutes is unavoidable, endless torture. Prisoners are experiencing severe stress, weight loss, dizziness, nausea, headaches, eye problems, stomach and bowel problems, faintness, depression, and sped-up heart rates. They cannot concentrate, exercise, read, do legal work- the things that help them survive- and they can’t sleep!

Your name, what city/state you live in

The banging of metal pipes on or next to the cells, throughout the day and night (part of these so-called welfare checks) keep people awake 24/7
Melodic and serious, people demonstrating outside of CDCr sang and chanted together loudly: “I can hear the prisoners saying I CAN’T SLEEP. We are here to PROTEST and we won’t LEAVE. Calling out the Torture of the CDC. We ain’t gonna STOP until the prisoners can SLEEP! NO, we ain’t gonna STOP until the prisoners can SLEEP!”

Calling out the TORTURE of the CDC

Powerfully, protesters spoke of the obvious health problems that we know result from sleep deprivation. CDCr tries to destroy prisoners’ minds and bodies and wants to punish for any assertion of their human rights or dignity.

SOLIDARITY WITH PRISONERS who suffer cruel treatment and retaliation from the policies of CDCr and its prison guards.
A press release was read about 4 people attacked in their cells by guards, Nov 11 at Central CA Women’s Facility. Stacy Rojas and others were strip searched in front of male guards, physically abused, sexually harassed and denied water, food and restrooms for 11 hours.

CDCr tried to intimidate protesters with a “property manager” and CA Highway Patrol officers, but the words of truth, chanting, singing, and interviews opposing torture of prisoners continued in strength in front of CDCr headquarters.
THIS IS A HUMAN RIGHTS CRISIS!

because you have my assembly member wrong. He is Rich Gordon. If you can correct this error, I will be happy to send a demand that the “security/welfare” checks be stopped. I am glad you are taking this action! Joan Peters
Thank you for doing this. Unfortunately I couldn’t send emails using your system. When I entered the nine digit zip code number, the one on the mail I get at my house, and with no dash, the system didn’t acknowledge it as existing.
Please keep your zip code to only be five digits. The extended zip code could be added after. Thank You!
We are not sending to our members. We are sending to our targets so it gets a bit confusing to not see your reps name, but CURB didn’t set it up like that.
Researchers have used animals for more extreme experiments, and the inevitable result is that prolonged sleep deprivation will eventually kill a creature. Various behavioral impairments accumulate along the way as the deprivation continues, but if the experiment is pushed far enough the final result is always a widespread physiological failure leading to death. The cumulative effects of sleep deprivation go beyond the loss of this or that specific function to a precipitous, ultimately fatal decline in all functions.
