Activists Lock Down at State Bldg – Updated

[Update: see Oakland Protestors Released] (Photo below) The Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition has learned that protestors locked themselves to the doors of the State Building on Clay St. in Oakland just minutes ago. Protesters are calling for Governor Brown and the CDCR to enter into honest negotiations with prisoners on hunger strike throughout California. Today marks the 29th day of the prisoners’ hunger strike.

In a statement released to local media, protesters said:

As Governor Brown continues to silently endorse the torture of California prisoners, with the death of hunger striker Billy “Guero” Sell, and in the face of ongoing retaliation against prisoners by the CDCR, we join the hunger strikers on this 29th day of their peaceful protest to meet their 5 demands.

Solitary confinement is widely and internationally recognized as torture. The hunger strikers and their family members are making a powerful and inspiring stand for dignity in the face of this inhumane treatment. We stand with them.

Governor Brown and the CDCR, negotiate immediately to meet the 5 demands.

Since the beginning of the strike, there have been almost daily actions around California, US, and in many other countries in support. Over 80,000 people have signed petitions to the CDCR and the Governor. Medical professionals, human rights organizations, students, unions, lawyers, religious leaders, prisoners and their family members have all spoken to the urgency of meeting the hunger strikers’ demands.

A recent statement by the Short Corridor Collective at Pelican Bay State Prison states, “We are being tortured each day by state officials (Governor Brown, his appointee CDCR Secretary Beard, and all his underlings). Increased retaliation has been perpetuated upon defenseless and starving prisoners who only seek what any human being strives for—humane treatment, dignity, equality, and justice for our families, loved ones, and ourselves. These are the fundamental rights of all people, including those incarcerated by the state.”

As people on strike record losing over 30 pounds, communications from inside indicate that people are being punished through denial of necessary medication, further isolation, and cruel treatment like blowing cold air into freezing cells.

  1. Thank you for keeping us posted on this issue. It is time for the government to take a stand on this and issue a statement. Ignoring it will not make it go away. As human beings we must take action to insure that our fellow man is not tortured. We believe in punishment but we must not endorse torture as punishment. SHUs and AdSegs ate just state sanctioned torture chambers.

  2. Gov. Brown and CDCR it is time now to follow Mississippi. Your system stinks! CA has been exercising solitary confinement for decades. Aren’t you noticing that it hasn’t given any results except negative ones? Is it that hard to understand once for all, that if you treat anyone like an animals, he will act like an animal? Why don’t you reform your prison system from A to Z? Moving inmates from jail to jail, from regular cell to solitary confinement cell for indefinite time is not really hard work to do. CA prison system is crying for help. Do something and if you really are not able to do so, at least copy Mississippi and the other states that have already done it. I truly hope you are able to copy, aren’t you?

  3. There are thousands of loved ones in california prisons,WHERE WERE ALL THE PRISONERS FAMILIES AT SACRAMENTO, THAT IS WHY THE GOVERNOR DOES NOTHING. WE SHOULD ALL GO )THOUSANDS OF US SHOULD SHOW UP AND SHOW HIM THAT HE HAS TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT, OTHER GROUPS OF PEOPLE SHOW UP WHEN THEY WANT SOMETHING DONE, BUT MANY OF US SAY, THAT SHOWING UP MAY MAKE THE CDC TREAT THE PRISONERS WORSE, COME ON THE GUARDS ARE DOING IT ANYWAY, WE SHOULD FIND OUT WHO THEY ARE AND SEE WHAT KIND OF PERSONS THEY REALLY ARE, MANY HAVE ISSUES OF THEIR OWN AND IN THEIR FAMILIES THAT THEY ARE SO ANGRY AT, AND THEY GO TO WORK FOR US (WE PAY TAXES AND THEIR SALARIES TO DO THE RIGHT THING BUT DO A CRIMMINAL JOB AND MISTREAT OUR LOVED ONES.AND WHERE IS THE REHABILITATION THAT THE SYSTEM SAYS IT IS CALLED TO DO BESIDES OTHER THINGS, THEY KEEP THE MENTALLY ILL SO DRUGGED THAT THEY DON’T EVEN KNOW IF THEY HAVE VISITS OR NOT. DAM THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY, BUT GOD SAYS ‘BE ANGRY AND SIN NOT’ BELIEVE ME I DO MY PART AND WILL CONTINUE TO SAY ON TOP OF THINGS MY WAY, WITH PRAY AND E-MAILING ETC.

    • I will go ! Just set the date and time – I agree – thousands are in the shu – thousands of family members need to show up / and also continue to call Brown and Sec Beard everyday !
